When you start thinking about changing jobs, it’s easy to focus on salary, job title, and responsibilities. But a fulfilling career is about more than what’s written in the job description. It’s also about whether the role aligns with your values, lifestyle, and what truly motivates you day to day. Before you send off your first application, it’s worth taking the time to understand what really matters to you.

Why Values Matter

Your values are the principles and beliefs that guide your decisions – in life and at work. They influence how you thrive, collaborate, and find meaning in what you do. If you work somewhere that clashes with your values – perhaps the culture is overly competitive, or the leadership style doesn’t suit you – frustration and stress can build up, even if the job looks ideal on paper.

On the other hand, when your job reflects your values, you’re more likely to feel energised, engaged, and proud of your contribution. That’s why knowing your own guiding principles is such an important first step in any job search.

Start by Looking Inward

Clarifying your values takes reflection. Ask yourself:

  • When have I felt most motivated at work – and why?
  • Which situations have drained my energy?
  • What matters most to me: security, growth, freedom, teamwork, recognition, or something else?
  • What compromises am I willing to make – and which are non-negotiable?

Write down your answers and look for patterns. You might realise you thrive in collaborative environments, or that flexibility is essential for balancing work and personal life. These insights can help you target roles and organisations that truly fit you.

Know the Difference Between Values and Goals

It’s easy to confuse values with goals. A goal might be to become a manager, earn more, or move into a specific industry. A value, however, is about why you want those things. Perhaps you want to lead because you value influence and responsibility – or because you want to create a supportive environment for others. When you understand the difference, your goals become more meaningful and easier to prioritise.

Research the Company Culture

Once you’re clear on your own values, the next step is to find out whether they align with the organisation you’re applying to. Read about the company’s mission, vision, and values – but don’t stop there. Look at how employees talk about their work on LinkedIn or Glassdoor. What do reviews or news articles say about leadership and work-life balance? How are achievements recognised?

During interviews, ask questions that reveal more about the culture:

  • How do you approach feedback and professional development?
  • What does a typical working day look like here?
  • What do you value most in teamwork and collaboration?

The answers can help you sense whether the company is a good fit for you – not just whether you’re a good fit for them.

Values as a Career Compass

When you know your values, decision-making becomes easier – whether it’s about changing jobs, developing your career, or finding balance in your working life. You gain an internal compass that helps you say yes to the right opportunities and no to those that don’t align with who you are.

That doesn’t mean you’ll find a perfect job. But it does mean you can make conscious choices and build a career that feels right for you.

Take Your Time – It’s Worth It

Clarifying your values isn’t something you can do in an afternoon. It takes time, honesty, and perhaps a conversation with a friend, mentor, or career coach. But the investment pays off. When you understand yourself better, you not only become a stronger candidate – you also become more likely to find satisfaction and purpose in the job you choose.
